The footbag — sometimes called a hacky sack — is one of the most accessible props in the kinetic arts world. It fits in your pocket, needs no special space, and can be practiced alone or in a circle with friends.

Why Footbag?

Footbag teaches you to use your whole lower body expressively. Every kick is a small choreographic choice. The inside kick, the outside kick, the toe stall — each develops different muscular patterns and spatial awareness.

Circle footbag (keeping a bag alive cooperatively with a group) builds communication and generosity. Freestyle footbag (individual tricks and combos) is endlessly creative.

Getting Started

KAA provides footbags at open sessions. No footwear requirements — though flat-soled shoes give you the most control when starting out.

Skill floor: Low. The inside kick is the natural starting point and most people get the feel within a few minutes.

Styles of Play

  • Circle/cooperative: Pass the bag around a group, everyone contributes
  • Net footbag: Like volleyball, using only your feet
  • Freestyle: Individual tricks, stalls, delays — the most expressive and acrobatic form
